Course Objectives

This learning module addresses the following course objectives:

2. Describe the threats to and vulnerabilities of personal, organizational, and national security information systems.
3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of principles and practices in information security, including application of encryption. 

Module Objectives

After completing the tasks of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the major categories of attacks against information technology resources.
  2. Compare several types of denial of service attacks, explain the mechanisms of each, and describe appropriate defenses.
  3. List and explain other network attacks and describe appropriate defenses.
  4. Compare and contrast three types of intrusion detection systems.
  5. Distinguish between intrusion detection and intrusion prevention.
  6. List and compare the types of firewalls; describe the uses for each type.

Tasks

To achieve the objectives of this module, you must do the following:

  1. Read chapters 6 to 9 of the textbook according to the schedule in the syllabus.
  2. Review with the class and instructor the slides sets Malicious Software, Denial of Service Attacks, Intrusion Detection, and Firewalls and Intrusion Prevention according to the schedule in the syllabus.
  3. Complete Quiz 5 by the due date.
  4. Complete Assignment 4  and Assignment 5 by the due dates.
