Course Objectives

This learning module addresses the following course objectives:

3. Demonstrate a working knowledge of principles and practices in information security, including application of encryption.
5. Analyze critically situations of computer use, identifying the security issues, consequences and viewpoints.

Module Objectives

After completing the tasks of this module, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the differences between identification, authentication, and authorization.
  2. Describe the mechanism for safely storing passwords or other authenticators.
  3. Describe the types of access control policies and the circumstances for which each is applicable.
  4. Explain the access control matrix model and distinguish between access control lists and capability lists.

Tasks

To achieve the objectives of this module, you must do the following:

  1. Read chapters 2 and 3 of the textbook.
  2. Review with the class and instructor the slides sets Identification and Authentication, Storing and Using Passwords, and Access Control.
  3. Complete Quiz 3 by the due date.
